When and why does Kino first realize his old life is gone

I think Kino finally realizes this in chapter 4 when he is attacked in the dark. Kino 's home had previously been filled with "the song of Peace" or the "song of the family". Now people, perhaps even his neighbours, have attacked him. His home is now full of fear.
