Where is there suspense in Chapter 3

One moment of suspense can be found in the doctor's treatment of Coyotito. Is he really looking to help the baby, or is he attempting to insure his services are needed.

Another moment of susense would be when Kino hears an intruder in the hut. With the presence of the pearl it could be most anyone, as the pearl has served to create jealous and greed amongst Kino and Juana's neighbors. Who might want to steal it, and to what lengths would they go to attain it?
