Why do you suppose the author uses so much animal imagery through out this clothing ?

Kino reverts to animalistic behaviour once he finds the pearl, literally howling in joy. Kino becomes both predator, defending his pearl, and prey by being stalked for his pearl The pearl causes Kino to revert to instinctual behaviour, a change that will have dangerous and disastrous consequences.
