Format of writing?

The letters give us an entrance into Charlie's personal thoughts. They are confessionals where we can explore Charlie's innermost emotions unfettered by other characters. This style of writing breaks the reader from the main narrative. This can be desirable because it brings us closer to the protagonist. It must be done to give us greater insight into the character. Letters simply as a plot manipulator is, in my opinion, not good use of the technique.
