What is Bill’s motivation in having Charlie read the various novels that connect thematically?

A large part of Charlie's development and continued understanding during the novel comes from the books that Bill assigns to him, and from his conversations with Bill about these books. Charlie's coming of age angst connects with many of the themes found in the books he reads like a Separate Peace and Catcher in the Rye.
