In the book, The Pianist, the war's effect on the Jewish population begins with basic needs. The Jews are forced to sell their belongings to survive, smuggling runs rampant, and the black market breaks them. A typhus epidemic breaks out in the ghetto, where dead bodies line the streets, and the sound of bombs alerts them to the arrival of the Germans. The Jews are given a list of rules and regulations and treated as outsiders, all while Warsaw is destroyed. The breaking of rules was accompanied by harsh repercussions, which include beatings and death. The Germans mocked the Jews, forced them into labor, and randomly murdered them..... then they chose large groups for resettlement, sending them away by train, never to return.
