Why does Orleanna describe herself and her daughters from a third-person point of view at the start of the book?

Although this book is about the guilt of five women, the story is very much an allegory about the guilt that America shares. Orleanna greater questions that involve more than her characters. This is why she changes her point of view throughout the book including the third person at the beginning.
