The Five Errors

What were the 5 "errors" committed by Louis 12 of France described by Machiavelli in chapters 3 and 4? How did the ancient Romans and Alexander the great avoid some of these mistakes?

Louis used the ambitions of the Venetians to enter Italy. Given the opportunity, he then proceeded to squander it by putting down weaker powers, increasing the strength of the church, and introducing Spain, a powerful foreigner, into the fray. Spain was the greatest mistake..... as no one would have taken Lombardy from France just to give it to Venice.
