How did Nanking affect China today?

Nanking was decimated, completely ruined. It took years for both the Chinese people and the city to recover from the rape of Nanking. The relationship between the two creas is tenuous, even today. As a country, China has become an economic powerhouse, although, that fact would be difficult to see in the living circumstances of many of its citizens.
