I don't think we see the extent of Henry's maturation until near the end of the novel. Henry's final transformation into manhood comes with his ability to admit his mistakes and see the things he would have done differently. He sees that heroic bravado in war is not real. He understands that there are no heroes rather than brave men who do their jobs. Thus, he becomes a man when he can finally admit that he was a naive and unknowing youth.
