The Red Badge of Courage

Before Crane, most war novels focused on the heroism of generals and other leaders. Why does Crane focus on the common soldiers? Does he portray common soldiers in a heroic manner? Explain.

I think Crane was going for a sense of realism. Heroism is portrayed as survival and war an animal devouring soldiers on both sides. The common soldier quickly learned there are no heroes in war.
