Do you get a sense of Crane's attitude toward his character Henry Fleming while reading? Does he respect Henry? Hate him? Mock him? Where do you see this?

Crane isn't judgmental about Henry. We feel his courage and his cowardess as part of the makeup of a boy thrust into battle. Henry is a dynamic character who we see change from a scared and self-doubting boy to a more self-realized and courageous young man. Henry holding the flag at the end of the story charging ahead is an example of this change. I think Crane maintains a respect for his protagonist throughout the story.
