Explain "He was at the rendezvous."

Jim Conklin was running to a spot where he would not be run over by artillery. He was quite dazed and disoriented. When he finally stops Henry notes that it was almost like he was expected to be there, waiting for someone,

"His bloody hands were quietly at his side. He was waiting with patience for something that he had come to meet. He was at the rendezvous. They paused and stood, expectant.."

Of course Jim really doesn't know what is really going on which makes the statement rather ironic.
