The Red Badge of Courage

How do you explain this calm reaction to such momentous news?

In a flashback, Henry recalls how he and his mother disagreed over his wish to enlist. When Henry informs his mother that he has enlisted, his mother is at first silent. Then she says, "The Lord's will be done, Henry," and continues to milk the cow.

Henry's mother was resigned to his news. They'd already discussed it, she disapproved, and once he enlisted, there was nothing she could do about it.
