Henry remembers his flight from the first battle and blushes while remembering. Then he reproaches himself, as he remembers the tattered soldier, who was so concerned for Henry's fabricated wound and Jim Conklin's sufferings. These memories cause to sweat, and he lets out a cry, which is heard by Wilson. When Wilson asks him what's wrong, the youth replies with an outburst of violent oaths.
