In Chapter 7, Crane writes "He threw a pinecone at a jovial squirrel, and he [the squirrel] ran with chattering fear."

Henry had just run from battle. The squirrel running away comforted Henry. At the sound of danger, the Squirrel too ran. Nature shows that running is the natural thing to do when faced with danger. It is unnatural to stay and face danger.
