In the red badge of courage in chapter one what is the animal metaphor?

There are not many animal metaphors in Ch. 1. Most of them come later in the book during battle. Still, I found the veterans call a new recruit "fresh fish" which happens to be a euphemism and alliteration too! "They persistently yelled "Fresh fish!" at him, and were in no wise to be trusted."
