The men are praised in Chapter 17 for the way they fight....... they move forward without a second thought and force their enemy to fall back until the battle is over. In Chapter 18 however, the praise of the Lieutenant is meaningless as the General orders Henry's regiment to a battle they're unlikely to survive. They were considered men who could be spared........ that's a far cry from Chapter 17.
