Romanticism as opposed to realism is a familiar theme in war stories. Paul Baumer experienced it in All Quiet on the Western Front and even Luke Skywalker wished to leave his farm (for the rebellion) in Star Wars. The nationalism, heroism and intoxicating violence are the stuff of boyhood fantasy. As Henry finds out, there are no heroes in war. Battle is confusing and terrifying. At one point Henry runs in panic. The enemy becomes war itself. There are no winners or loosers; there is only the animal instinct to survive.
