The words of the sarcastic man penetrate Henry in an unsettling way:
"The speech pierced the youth. Inwardly he was reduced to an abject pulp by these chance words. His legs quaked privately. He cast a frightened glance at the sarcastic man."
Another soldier sarcastically says that Henry must think he fought yesterday’s battle all by himself. This is because Henry feels shame because he had run from the battle.
