What killed Henry's courage to fight again?

After he regained much needed courage, he once again began to second guess his circumstances. He had no gun. Where was his regiment? What would his comrades say if they saw the way he was returning? What would he say when questioned by his comrades? How would he lie to them, because he would have to lie?
"Eventually, his courage expended itself upon these objections. The debates drained him of his fire." (Chapter 11)
These thoughts killed his courage, and then after fighting the great debate in his mind he went onto the way he fely physically.
