In Chapter 6 Henry enters his first brutal battle. Henry witnesses fellow soldiers, "scamper away through the smoke." Terrified, Henry runs too. It is difficult to know exactly how the other soldiers felt. Initially, Henry is worried he will be labeled a coward and become a pariah amongst his regiment. Later he finds that a curious amount of soldiers had wandered back like he did. So, although it seemed unconscionable to run away, there is an unspoken understanding about it that gave these boys a chance to redeem themselves.
