Why does henry feel he is in a moving box?

Henry was trapped within the regiment, surrounded by his comrades. As they moved, he felt as if he were trapped inside of a box...... surrounded on all four sides.

But he instantly saw that it would be impossible for him to escape from the regiment. It inclosed him. And there were iron laws of tradition and law on four sides. He was in a moving box.
