Why was Henry surprised after the first battle? In the novel, "The Red Badge of Courage" by Stephen Crane

Henry was surprised by the chaos.... the fact that the battle chould have gone either way, and the way in which, the battle seemed to be a game of chance rather than skill. He was also surpised by the fact that the rest of the world, meaning nature, seemed to have just gone along, unaware of what had transpired.

As he gazed around him the youth felt a flash of astonishment at the blue, pure sky and the sun gleamings on the trees and fields. It was surprising that Nature had gone tranquilly on with her golden process in the midst of so much devilment.
