Coleridge once wrote that a reader must put aside his or her understanding of reality and accept the writers world.

There is a strong metaphysical part to his story. One has to consider the existence of ideas like God, sin, redemption and the afterlife to truly appreciate this poem. The romantic sense of all life as precious and part of the greater plan of things needs to be considered to understand what Coleridge was trying to say.
