I think he does both in a literal and metaphorical sense. The men died after the Mariner shot and killed the albatross. The Mariner feels this sense of death in that his cremates turned into ghost zombies. It isn't until the mariner has his epiphany, courtesy of the slimy sea-snakes, that all living things are sacred does his re-birth take place. The albatross slips off his neck and the Mariner then spends his time cornering people to make them hear his story.
I think you are right...I think when the mariner and his crew began their journey in the sea it symbolizes their innocence because he was not aware of the importance of nature. Him shooting the albatross (the symbol of Christ) was his curse. To some point he is condemned to life in death by the spirits. Thus the spirits own his immortal soul. When he blessed the water snakes was when he had an epiphany, and realized that God loves every creature big, small, ugly, and beautiful thus his sin was forgiven but his curse was not completely broken. The rain washed away his sin as if he was being baptized...i think this marks his rebirth. Him confessing his sins through certain people is a way of him renewing his soul that is in agony and filled with spirits (probably the holy spirit) which help him hypnotize those certain people.
