The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
how does coleridge use setting and character to establish background
Part 1
Part 1
The poem actually has two different settings. The first setting is outside a wedding hall. There is no actual time period given. The place refers to somewhere in the British Isles, perhaps in Scotland. The setting of the Mariner's tale is, of course, the sea. His story begins in the bay and travels throughout the arctic. The trip involves going up the equator and back again to the bay. Implicit in this journey is the albatross which travels along. These very natural settings support the motif of the natural elements combined with magic realism.
