The Romantics differed from other poets in that they tended to champion holy nature rather than religious institutions. Knowing God came through communion with nature. So, like the belief in God, the Mariner despised, feared and finally loved the natural elements. The open ocean painted the Mariner as small and insignificant. Throughout the journey the wonder and beauty of nature is brought into focus. Finally in his final epiphany, the Mariner discovers that nature is God, including the beautiful albatross. His sin was to cease to love nature and thus cease to love God. His redemption comes when he realizes the beauty around him,
“O happy living things! No tongue
Their beauty might declare:
A spring of love gushed from my heart,
And I blessed them unaware:
Sure my kind saint took pity on me,
And I blessed them unaware”
