Look closely at the imagery in the opening scene.

Where we first meet the Mariner. Where is this scene, and what is taking place? Who are the characters? And what, therefore, are the circumstances in which we overhear the whole story?

The first scene takes place just outside the place a wedding is being celebrated. The character are the Mariner and the guests, who are on their way to a wedding. Thus, the Mariner is delaying the guest in order to tell his story.
