Is the ending hopeful?

Despite the world being on its last gasping breaths, the boy does find a family that does not want to kill or eat him. They seem to be carrying a similar "fire" that the man and boy did. One wonders if there is any redemption for a world that has fallen to the depths of such depravity: I suppose we can only hope.
