The mansion is large and empty. There is an echoing silence that surrounds the place. The boy finds it especially unnerving,
We should go papa.
We've got to find something to eat. We have no choice.
We could find somewhere else...
It is the rot of a place originally meant to look lavish and beautiful that also creates a sense of foreboding.
