1) "people were always getting ready for tomorrow. I didn't (sic) believe in that. Tomorrow wasn't grtting ready for them. It didn't even know they were there." (168) what is Ely talking about?

Elie explains the futility of human nature. People get ready for the next day without considering they are destroying themselves at the same time.

When Ely says this, he is trying to convey that no one knows what the future holds. Ely is explaining that no matter how much people will try to prepare for what is to come, the world waits for no one.
