Why is it mentioned that the once-grand house had slaves, and what might that foreshadow?

This section provides another example of foreshadowing. As the man explains to his son that the once-grand house is located on what was once a plantation, he doesn't yet know that there are people locked up in the basement of that very same house..... the people can be seen as slaves, who are not meant to perform physical labor, but rather, serve as food for the cannibals.
