What warns them of death, if they continue traveling in the same direction?

Take your pick of horrid symbols that seem to warn father and son of the dangers ahead. I don't know if you are referring to a particular one. An image that stands out for me is in Section 7 when they see the corpses of travelers who have been burned alive on the road's tar. That's pretty foreboding stuff!
