Why do you think the author uses the expression "honor bright" repeatedly?

I think that "honor bright" might have been a very Briitish term during the time period. There is a sense of honor involved with gentlemen agreements in matters involving money. "Bright" would just be a colloqueal term that enhanced "honor".
