Paul's illness, per se, is spurred by his need to "fix" the family's money problems, to make his mother, in particular, happy. As a child, he doesn't understand that his mother's needs can never be met. Throughout the story, we see him pushing harder and harder.... we also see the adults taking part and spurring him on. The adults in the story allow Paul to take on their own responsibilities.
