8) Who is Hawthorne comparing Chillingworth to when he describes him as the “tempter who has come up from the nether region?” Given this analogy, why does Chillingworth not want Dimmesdale to acknowledge Hester and Pearl?

Chillingworth is being compared to the Devil. If Dimmesdale would acknowledge Hester and Pearl, Chillingworth would no longer have control over Dimmesdale and his secret thoughts. He would no longer be able to use guilt as a way to keep the minister suffering.

And I also suffer from serious anxiety attacks. Just for no reason.
