In a way Dimmesdale becomes more effective because of what he is feeling and how he relates those feelings to the crowd to whom he preaches. He is effective because he is now one of the crowd; his plaintive voice (one in which he is pleading with them) begs them to repent and see how soon justice will fall upon them.
