Explain the general attitude of the community now toward Hester. What group of people were slower to accept Hester's kindnesses? Why?

THe general attitude of the community had changed. Through Hester's pious good works of reading the poor, sewing clothes for the less fortunate and general humbleness in her penance led many to interpret he "A" as the word "able". Still the die hard Puritans and higher officials, although noticing the change, did not forgive her. To forgive her would mean that there was hope for a doomed soul; they needed her to forever bear the mark to validate their own existence.
