Although good and evil are presented in both books, I would have to disagree with this statement. At the heart of interpretive literature (like the two titles) are shades of grey. Good and evil are absolute terms. Hester, Dimmesdale and even Chillingworth are motivated by matters more complex than simple labels. In The Kite Runner, Amir and Hassan go through extremely complex situations around culture, tradition and human nature. Sure there are elements that include good and evil but they are tempered by all kinds of complexities. As for examples, consider Amir's treatment of Hassan. Although often harsh, his motivations had to do with his relationship with Baba, Afghan tradition and self loathing. Good and evil really don't fit. Similarly Hester, Dimmesdale and Chillingworth have a complex triangle of secrets, regret and emotions that can't be summed up as good or evil.
