How does Hawthorne explain the remarkable increase in influence over his congregation which Mr. Dimmesdale develops as he grows sicklier?

AS Dimmesdale grows sicker the parishioners take this as a sign that Dimmesdale is making some sort religious sacrifice that is bringing him closer to God. The Puritans felt this suffering was brings their priest into a communion with God.
