There is much emotion involved with Hawthorn's classic. The hypocrisy of these puritans is always in front of the reader. We see the historical reasons behind what happened but it is, in the end, the emotion of it all that wins the reader over. The gentle patience that Hester bears her penance with is easily felt. The love of Pearl and Hester as well as the twisted relationship between Dimmesdale and Chillingworth are acutely felt more than understood. Themes of salvation and redemption are the stuff of human spirit that must be felt more than analyzed.
