I think Hester is starting to come around at this point. THe dark forest seems to bring out a sense of honesty and welcome relief from the stifling hypocritical town. Hester is beginning to see Dimmesdale and Pearl as a product of the opposite of sin. Hester is able to separate herself from the self-abusing lessons she has been taught in the town.
