Pearl had her mother all to herself all of her life. The presence of Dimmesdale, and the knowledge that he now claimed a place in what was their world of two threw her. She didn't understand exactly what it all meant and wasn't at all sure she liked it. Pearl was rightly confused.

"Since the latter rambled from her side, another inmate had been admitted within the circle of the mother’s feelings, and so modified the aspect of them all, that Pearl, the returning wanderer, could not find her wonted place, and hardly knew where she was."
