To what extent does “self-preservation” play a role in the concept of human dignity in the scarlet letter?

Hester must wear her sin like a badge of honor to preserve her dignity. He "sin" was borne out of love and her child represents love. Rather than bend under humiliation and scorn of the town, Hester has her own sense of morality and values that keeps her strong and grounded. Dimmesdale flounders trying to preserve himself. He hides his sin behind Hester but drowns in his own guilt. Unlike Hester, he does not have his own moral compass rather he inflicts judgment upon himself.
