What are the benefits and the detractors of such a community in the scarlet letter

I suppose the community is closely knit as well as share the same narrow belief system. The detractors are much more evident. Hypocrisy, abuse of power, paranoia, no self-expression, and a mob mentality would not make the village a very nice place to live in.
