The effects of the letter on Hester herself change over the years. At first, hester is seen as an adulterer and it marks her as an outcast. Later, it associated with the word "able" in light of Hester's work within and for the community. In the end, it becomes seen as the mark of an angel due to Hester's return to the community and charitable acts.
