What does Dimsdale mean when he says “Wondrous generosity of a woman’s heart?”

Though we aren't aware of it at the time, Dimmesdale is acknowledging Dimmesdale's generosity in refusing to name Pearl's father. We later learn that Dimmesdale is Pearl's father.
