What is ironic about Dimmesdale’s reaction to Hester’s refusal to name the father of her child?

Dimmesdale does not look ashamed that Hester is taking all the stress of covering for him. He actually seems relieved: he talks about the wondrous strength and generosity of a woman's heart.
