One is that he is still a wise, if somewhat eccentric, doctor. They feel that he can help their priest (Dimmesdale) recover his wits and health. The other view is that he has changed since the beginning of the novel. They see him as a shrivelled old man who is bitter and resentful. He has a vendetta to fulfill but most townspeople don't know exactly what it is.
